How can I transfer a save file between a physical cartridge and my computer?

Thanks to the Backup Save and Upload Save functions, you can use the GB Operator to transfer a save file between your computer and a physical cartridge that is connected to our device. Quick note about the difference between these two: backing up a save refers to creating a copy on your computer from the data on the cartridge, while uploading a save replaces the existing data on the cartridge with the save file you select from your computer.

Here are a few things we recommend as good practices when overwriting the save file on the cartridge:

    1. Make sure you clean the cartridge pins before using the game with the GB Operator. Here is a quick tutorial: https://support.epilogue.co/hc/en-us/articles/4813281083282-How-should-I-clean-my-game-cartridge-pins. If there is corrosion or debris on the pins, it can interfere with the back-up or reading/writing process. This is not necessary every time, but some games have not been cleaned once in the 20+ years since they launched so they are most at risk. Better safe than sorry!
    2. Back-up the original save. Before overwriting anything, make sure you have a working copy of the save that was initially on the cartridge. You can test by backing up both game and save file with the same exact name (only different extensions), then opening them up in an external emulator such as mGBA for example. After this is confirmed, you can copy-paste the file and then apply changes to the copy, that would not affect the initial save.
    3. Do not disconnect the cartridge or device during the operation. Make sure there are no connection issues between the computer, device and cartridge. We recommend using the cable included to hook up the GB Operator directly to your computer instead of a USB hub, for a better connection.
    4. Check that you are using a compatible save file. The file extension should be .sav, not .gb, .gbc or .gba which are all game file extensions. The save should also hold some data already, which is reflected in the file size.

Overall, it's always best to err on the side of caution, so definitely create backups before moving on to editing or overwriting save files. Clean pins make a huge difference and increase the chances that this process will go smoothly, so do not skip this important step.

Now that that's out of the way, here are a few scenarios when transferring saves between cartridge and computer with your GB Operator can come in handy:

  • The battery needs to be replaced: The original batteries on these games have an estimated lifespan of 20-30 years, which is coincidentally how long they've been on the market already. Once the battery is gone, so is any save data it might be holding - if you don't back it up in time. With the GB Operator, you can transfer the save file from the cartridge to your computer, then have the battery replaced (either at home or at a shop specialised in retro games). Once the new battery is installed, connect the cartridge to the GB Operator again and use the Upload Save function to put back the save file you previously had. The process takes only a few simple steps, and then you can play that same save for another 20-30 years!
  • You want to experiment with save manipulations: There are some external software programs that allow users to change data in the save file, such as triggering in-game events or injecting items. This can open up a wide range of modifications which can make gameplay more enjoyable. Back up the initial save file to your computer, make a copy and then modify it externally. After everything is completed, simply upload the copied and modified file back to the physical cartridge with the GB Operator. You can have as many copies as you'd like, each with its own set of manipulations, and take turns writing them to play on the physical cartridge.
  • You want to have a digital library of your collection: By backing up your games and saves, you create a personal digital archive that perfectly mirrors the physical collection in your home.

Transferring saves between your computer and cartridge is a straightforward process. With the GB Operator, it literally only takes a couple of clicks and then you can rest easy knowing your precious saves are, well... safe.
